2011 WEST OTTAWA SOFTBALL SEASON

Try-outs for the 2011 softball season will start on Monday, March 14th!  Please don't wait until the last minute to get your physicals and remember to be participating in as much conditioning and 4 player practices as to what you can do.

Conditioning occurs every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15 - 4:30 pm meeting upstairs on the track near the concessions counter.  Come with your gym shoes on, work out clothes and a great attitude!

W.O. Comes in 2nd Place at Panther Tournament

West Ottawa softball hosted a 4 team Panther Tournament on Saturday. In the first game, WO played Sparta and won 4-2 on a complete game pitching win by Amy VanderStoep. Offensively, Hannah Goble and Heather Essenburg led the offensive attack. Goble had a double and a single and Essenburg had a triple and a single.


In the championship game, West Ottawa was defeated by Northview 6-0. Despite taking the pitching loss, Hannah Goble threw very well. Aileen Jackson and Taylor Dean each had a double in the loss.

West Ottawa concludes their regular season play this week on the road. On Monday they play a double header at Rockford, on Thursday they have a double header at Unity Christian and on Friday they play at Wolters Stadium on the campus of Hope College for the annual Battle of the Bridge game against Holland.

West Ottawa wins two over Muskegon

West Ottawa softball team wins both ends of an OK Red Doubleheader against Muskegon on Tuesday evening to raise their season record to 14-12-1 on the season and 5-7 in the OK Red.


In the opener, Amy VanderStoep pitched a complete game one hitter while striking out 9 and walking two. Offensively, Heather Essenburg had two triples and three RBI's and Katelyn Klinesteker and Megan Nowicki each had two hits a piece.

In the nightcap, Hannah Goble pitched a complete game one hitter while striking out 6 and walking none. Heather Essenburg was the big hitter in the nightcap batting 4 - 4 (all singles). Collecting two hits a piece were Katelyn Klinesteker and Aileen Jackson. Christina Hanchett had 3 RBI's in the game.

West Ottawa is back in action on Saturday when they host a Panther Tournament featuring WO, Sparta, Decatur and Northview.

W.O. beats Allegan 9-2

West Ottawa Varsity Softball beat Allegan on Monday night at Allegan by a score of 9-2. Amy VanderStoep picked up the win and Hannah Goble recorded her first save of the season. WO bats came alive with 14 hits and Hannah Goble led the way with 3 hits (2 singles and a double). Collecting two hits a piece were Elaine Whitbeck, Heather Essenburg (double and triple), Katelyn Klinesteker, Christina Hanchett, and Aileen Jackson.


West Ottawa is back in action tomorrow afternoon hosting a home double header against OK Red Conference Muskegon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm.

The Panthers stand at 12 wins and 12 loses and 1 tie on the season.

WO and Grandville Split Doubleheader

West Ottawa Softball split a home double header against Grandville Wednesday evening winning the opener 2-1 in 8 innings. Junior pitcher Amy VanderStoep threw a one hitter while striking out 13 batters. Elaine Whitbeck led the offensive attack with 2 hits and scored the winning run from 2nd base on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning with two outs.


In the night cap, West Ottawa lost 9-5. Taylor Dean led the offensive attack with a double, single and three RBI's.

West Ottawa's record stands at 11 wins, 12 loses and 1 tie. They are back in action with a home double header tomorrow against Ravenna starting at 4:30 pm.

West Ottawa Takes Two from Grand Haven

Thursday evening...The West Ottawa Varsity softball team hosted Grand Haven in an OK Red doubleheader at West Ottawa. In the opener, West Ottawa won 6-2 and was supported by an outstanding pitching performance by Amy VanderStoep. For the game, VanderStoep gave up 2 hits and struck out 16 batters. Offensively, freshman Taylor Dean led the team with two hits and Amy VanderStoep had a key RBI triple.


In the night cap, West Ottawa won 9-1. Hannah Goble picked up the complete game win allowing 5 hits, 1 walk and striking out 10. Freshman, Heather Essenburg and Senior Christina Hanchett both had two singles and Elaine Whitbeck had 4 stolen bases.

West Ottawa is back in action on Saturday when the compete in the Zeeland East Tournament. First game is at 9:00 am against Covenant Christian.

W.O. splits with G.R. Catholic Central

W.O. played GR Catholic Central this evening and lost the first game 12-2 but came back and took the night cap 3-2 on a stellar pitching performance by Junior Amy VanderStoep. Vanderstoep came in in relief in the first game to throw four innings giving up one hit, one earned run and 6 strike outs. In the night cap, VanderStoep pitched the complete game win giving up 2 hits, one earned run while striking out 8 and walking 2. Offensively, Freshman Heather Essenburg had two singles with one of them giving WO the go-ahead run in the second game with two outs in the 4th inning.


West Ottawa is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Jenison for an OK Red double header.

West Ottawa wins two over Holland Christian

On Monday evening (4/19) the Varsity softball team hosted a home double header against Holland Christian. The Panthers won the first game with a score of 10-6. Junior, Amy VanderStoep came in in relief to pick up the win. Sophomore, Elaine Whitbeck collected 3 hits in the game with two singles and a triple. Hannah Goble and Christina Hanchett each add two hits.

In the nightcap, Sophomore Hannah Goble earned the win by pitching a complete game. The panthers were down 2-0 going into the 4th inning with two outs when Elaine Whitbeck drew a walk and then freshman, Heather Essenburg followed with a 2 run home run to tie the score at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning West Ottawa broke open the score by forcing 5 runs across the plate before getting an out. Junior, Amy VanderStoep ripped a triple to score Whitbeck with the go-ahead run. The final score was 7-2. In game two, Sophomore Aileen Jackson went 4-4 with 3 singles and a double while Heather Essenburg, Breanna Butcher and Christina Hanchett each added two hits.
West Ottawa opens OK Red conference play on Thursday with a home double header against Hudsonville.

West Ottawa Loses in Martin E. Ball Championship Game

Saturday, April 17...The West Ottawa Varsity Softball team was down 7-3 going into the 5th inning of the 1st game of the Martin E. Ball softball tournament before scoring 5 runs in the 5th inning with the highlight being a bases loaded triple by freshman, Taylor Dean. In the 6th inning the Panthers added 3 more runs and finished with an 11-7 win. Freshman Heather Essenburg lead the offensive attack with 4 hits (3 singles and a double) and 3 RBI's. Fellow freshman, Taylor Dean collected 4 RBI's in the game. Junior Katelyn Klinesteker also contributed with two key singles. Sophomore Hannah Goble picked up the win in relief.

In the championship game, WO faced Hamilton and Hamilton won the game 10-0. Hamilton's pitcher, senior, Hannah Klenk controlled the game from the start and only gave up two hits while striking out 9 of our batters and walking only one. Started Hannah Goble took the pitching loss for the Panthers.
West Ottawa is back in action on Monday with a home double header against Holland Christian and then opens league play on Thursday with a home double header against Hudsonville. All games begin at 4:30 pm.

West Ottawa takes two from GR Union

The West Ottawa Varsity Softball team (3-1-1) beat GR Union two times at home on Wednesday, April 14th. West Ottawa won both games on Stellar pitching performances from both of their starting pitchers. In the opener the Panthers won 6-0 and sophomore pitcher Hannah Goble pitched 7 shutout innings while giving up two singles and striking out 12 while walking none. Leading the offensive attack in game #1 was sophomore Elaine Whitbeck with two singles and sophomore Breanna Butcher with two singles.


In the nightcap, West Ottawa won 10-0 when the game was called due to the run rule in the 5th inning. Junior Amy VanderStoep had a no hitter through 4 and two thirds inning before giving up an infield single. VanderStoep pitched the complete game shutout allowing one hit, while striking out 11 and walking 3. Sophomore Aileen Jackson had three hits in the 2nd game while Goble, Butcher and Whitbeck each had two hits. Junior Katelyn Klinesteker and Butcher and Goble also had back to back to back doubles in the 1st inning which helped the Panthers jump out with the early lead.

West Ottawa is back in action on Saturday as they host the Martin E. Ball Softball Tournament at West Ottawa with WO playing Hartford and the first pitch being thrown at 10:00 am.

W.O. wins one and ties one against Muskegon Reeths Puffer

After returning from an awesome team trip to TN for spring training, the Panthers went on the road to Muskegon Reeths Puffer on Tues., 4/13 to play a double header. The Panthers won the first game 9-2 against an outstanding pitching performance by sophomore Hannah Goble. Goble allowed 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 9 and walking 1. She also helped offensively with two hits and an RBI. Other players with two hits were sophomore Elaine Whitbeck, and freshman Heather Essenburg.


The nightcap was called due to darkness with the teams being tied at 6-6. Reeths Puffer jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but the Panthers kept chopping away and tied it 6-6 before the game was called. Junior Katelyn Klinesteker lead the offensive attack with two singles.

West Ottawa now stands at 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie early in the season.

WO is back in action today with a home double header starting at 4:30 pm against Grand Rapids Union.

2010 H.S. Softball Season Ready to Begin

The West Ottawa Softball season is underway and games will be starting next week for our Varsity and JV teams.  Both Varsity and JV host home openers next Tuesday, March 30th at West Ottawa.  Game time is 4:00 pm and they both will be playing a single game.  Then early Friday monring, (April 2) the varsity team along with Coach Mathews and three of her JV Players, Megan Nowicki, Maggie Chrispell and Sydney Smith will be leaving for a spring break trip to TN.  While in TN the girls will be practicing for roughly 30 hours and also going to many area attractions. 
The week we return from TN all teams are in action.
Tues., 4/13 - JV and Varsity will be playing a double header at Muskegon Reeths Puffer and our two M.S. teams will be playing a game against each other on the JV field.
Wed., 4/14 - Varsity has a home double header against Grand Rapids Union starting at 4:30 pm
Thurs., 4/15 - Our Freshman team travels for 2, 5 inning games against Hudsonville and Harbor Lights M.S. plays Creekside at home and Mac Bay M.S. plays at Cityside in Zeeland
Sat., 4/17 - Our Varsity team will be hosting the Martin E. Ball tournament.  The four team pool includes W.O., Fennville, Hamilton and Hartford)
